36.            EJECTION-SEAT

You can save lives as you take them
And you can make both armourer and pilot sweat
For different and distant reasons.
We fear your power on ground zero
When the hero’s arm you
And slide you back slowly.
As they stand on you they pray for their lives.
They cut and paste your workings
In the high-low climate of air.
It is the barometer, which gives the pilot air
When the drag-shoot keeps him strait
And the seat decay.
The parachute will float you down
Above the safety-equipment’s lucky packet
And then you finally thank the armourer
For not cheating on his checklist
As they both wipe the sweat away
They know it worked eventually.
