23.        THE LITERATE

In books we find friends,
in the educated problems,
in the unlettered careless
and in the wise more friends.

He who follows the cow path
is tendering his own death.
Like the head of Macbeth,
education in blindness is death.

First we are students
of many subjects and thoughts.
Then we are more experienced students
of the same subjects and thoughts.
Yet it is rather what Man
has given that matters.
